Exhibition: Emily Coulson - Top Of The Stairs
Exhibition Preview - Friday 4th May, 6:30pm
Exhibition Continues - 5-7th May, 10am-4pm.
Wasps tenant Emily Coulson will host a fantastic new exhibition at our quaint studio building, Links Studios, in Nairn.
Top Of The Stairs is a collection of memories, experiences, and interpretations of Emily's childhood home and early years.
In recent years I have been exploring my past. The house I grew up in was rented by my parents and became a listed building after our time there. I found this fascinating because the building was judged important enough to be protected however my experience living there was a little different. This beautiful building held secrets in its walls which no-one else could see, not just my families secrets but the secrets of families before us too. Many, many times I heard the ghostly footsteps of a soul still inhabiting the upstairs bedroom and wondered who it was and why were they still there. My work looks at my experiences as a child living there and where I have ended up.
I use different materials to explore the journey from my childhood to my middle age and have been extremely privileged to have worked with some extraordinary craftsmen/women allowing me to access even the most specialised of processes for which I am deeply indebted.
This exhibition runs Friday 4th - Monday 7th May, 10am-4pm.
‘All earthly things by turn we see
Become another’s property,
Mine now, must be another’s soon,
I know not whose, when I am gone,
An earthly house is bound to none.’
A poem engraved on a stone written in Latin set into the facade of a building in Nairn.
