I was born in Northampton, England but spent my childhood in Lancashire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire. I went to University in St Andrews then worked in industry in London and Paris and later in economic development in Glasgow. Now I live in Newburgh Fife, Scotland, where I share a studio.
I was taught some art appreciation at primary school. Favourite artists were Titian and Cezanne. But I tended towards sciences so had little art training at school and got a degree in Physics. After I started work in 1968 I got some oil paints and my bedsit stank of turpentine and linseed oil. I painted landscapes and fantasy, just like now.
Starting a family and a mortgage made painting difficult until later, when I joined art clubs and tried different styles and media, finishing with acrylics. My club held exhibitions but sales were always poor. We had a visiting tutor who showed us silk painting and I tried painting cushion covers and sold four in my first North Fife Open Studios event. After that I tried silk scarves and they were instantly popular. That was about 5 years ago. Now I still do the acrylic painting for my own pleasure but the sales and commissions of silk scarves are my main art activity.
As I developed my techniques and dreamed up more designs, theses scarves became popular with family and friends, and then with visitors to my studio. Word spread, and now I get a steady stream of commissions and repeat orders for accessories to go with outfits, and for birthday and Christmas presents. The scarves have been sent to England, Australia, Greece, Canada and the USA, and always get a delighted response.
