Mary Morrison was brought up on the Isle of Harris, studied at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art receiving a joint MA Hons in Fine Art, followed by a Distinction at Post-Graduate level. Her work is largely informed by the Atlantic archipelago and themes which relate to place in a geo-poetic sense. Her work combines sense of place with layers of meaning suggested by annotation - of music, mapping, measuring.
Where works have titles referring to specific locations, the intention is to draw on personal connections to these places in order to explore wider themes. Her work investigates the relationship between the individual and the landscape that has shaped them, something you carry with you - a ‘geography of the mind.’
‘There is fluidity and formality in her technique which is beautifully balanced andher response to he Highland landscape is refreshing and inspired. This work is not about surfaces, but understanding…’ Georgina Cobur
