My enduring love is literature, which explains my fascination with drawing writers, something I have done on a regular basis over a period of thirty years. The list is long - Colm Toibin, Richard Holloway, A L Kennedy, Ali Smith, Christine de Luca, Joy Hendry , and many others. I also love to draw actors, a new passion inspired by my son, the playwright Michael Shand.
The following is a quotation from Colm Toibin's 'Bad Blood: a walk along the Irish Border' :
"We walked down the hill, leaving the stones (of the Beltany Stone Circle) to their magic, away from the reminder that there was once a time in this place when there were no Catholics or Protestants; the dim past standing there on the crown of the hill, for once a history which could do us no harm, could not teach us, inspire us, remind us, beckon us, embitter us: history locked up in stone. "
