I live just outside Edinburgh. I attended Edinburgh College of Art and then Wimbledon School of Art, for a Postgraduate Diploma in Drawing, at this time I won a scholarship for a year-long residency with ArtSpace Portsmouth it was a really interesting time. After this I set off travelling, and ended up teaching Art & Design in Shanghai and staying in China to live, work and travel for three years.
My work whether abstract or figurative responds to the drama of human experience. The immediacy of drawing, either from life or from particular places which have resonance for me, is my motivation. Paintings often start from exploratory marks in response to subject matter, my aim is to extract a narrative that is both intuitive and meaningful. Recently the subject matter is figurative and deals with ideas surrounding wish fulfilment. My influences for this range from Icarus to the Magic Realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
I recently went to Italy to learn new printmaking techniques where colour is key to the design and which, along with new paintings, I am hoping to develop further at Glasgow Printmakers.
