The work is produced in an intuitive process of invention, oblique memory and imagination. The images form a kind of obscure fictional diary of whimsical notions, isolated figures and gormless icons. The landscape images are based on both real and invented locations and spontaneous generation prompted by the nature of the paint.
They do not necessarily document specific places but I hope to convey some feeling of the world. Images can be stimulated by observation and experience but my aim is for the paintings to be ambiguous yet engaging and to develop a life of their own.
